A national training on sustainable waste management took place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on June 29 and 30, 2017.
The training provided an opportunity for stakeholders from Bosnia and Herzegovina to discuss the level of harmonisation of national legislation with EU regulations, and the preparation of policy documents in the field of waste management. It also contributed to better mutual understanding among environmental inspectors regarding their respective legal frameworks and enforcement issues, and promoted fruitful models for cooperation between public entities dealing with waste management and the NGO sector.
Conclusions drawn from the training are that support is needed for the development of legislation, and further efforts are required to strengthen communication and coordination among all relevant institutions. It was also noted that there is still insufficient information for the general public about waste management and the negative consequences of waste on the environment and public health. Participants generally agreed on the need for an internal network of environmental enforcers in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
